3.6 million foreign workers registered in the INPS databases

According to the new data from the INPS (National Institute for Social Security) Observatory on foreigners, in the year 2022, there are 4,159,880 foreign citizens, both from EU and non-EU countries, recorded in the INPS databases. Among them, 3,630,154 (87.3%) are active workers, 304,510 (7.3%) are retirees, and 225,216 (5.4%) are recipients of income support benefits.

The 72.6%, equivalent to 3,020,242 individuals, comes from non-EU countries, 278,597 (6.7%) from EU member countries, and 861,041 (20.7%) from other EU countries. The analysis of data by country of origin highlights the presence of 707,166 Romanians, representing 17.0% of the total foreigners recorded in the Institute’s archives. They are followed by Albanians, Moroccans, Chinese, Ukrainians, and Filipinos. These six nationalities together account for approximately half of all foreigners known to INPS (47.9%).

Among foreign citizens, males prevail (56.2%), especially among those from Pakistan (94.6%), Bangladesh (93.6%), Egypt (91.7%), Senegal (83.7%), India (78.8%), and Morocco (71.7%). Women, on the other hand, predominate among workers from Ukraine, Moldova, Peru, and the Philippines. In 2022, 61.7% of foreigners recorded in the Institute’s archives reside or work in Northern Italy, 23.5% in Central Italy, and 14.8% in Southern Italy and the Islands.

Private wage employees number 3,140,197, with an average annual salary of €15,261.87. Among them, 2,316,034 work in the non-agricultural private sector (64.5% male) with an average annual salary of €17,490.98. Additionally, 285,395 work in the agricultural sector (73.5% male), earning an average annual salary of €9,061.97 (€9,600.62 for males and €7,567.18 for females). Workers engaged in domestic assistance amount to 538,768, with an average annual salary of €8,963.65 (€9,050.03 for males and €8,950.23 for females).
