The Calabria Region continues its fight against labour exploitation in agriculture

The Calabria Region continues its commitment to combating all forms of exploitation, particularly in the agricultural sector, by approving a notice for interventions aimed at providing assistance, treatment, and protection of the health, as well as promoting the social inclusion of migrants in the areas of Piane di Sibari and Gioia Tauro. The intervention is funded by the Ministry of Labour and Social Policies and aims to continue the action against labour exploitation in agriculture, which was initiated within the context of the PIÙ SU.PR.EME project. The project received funding of 706,000 euros from the European Commission.

The Regional Minister for Social Policies, Emma Staine, explained that the notice has been published to solicit expressions of interest from third sector associations in order to ensure the continuity of supplementary interventions to the European project. The main objective is to counter and overcome all forms of severe labour exploitation, marginalization, and vulnerability of migrant workers in Calabria. This step is crucial to promote respect for legality and support those who, through their work, contribute to the region’s economy.

The action involves providing assistance and monitoring the health conditions of migrants living in settlements in the most significant agricultural areas. This initiative is part of the strategy that Calabria, along with four other regions in Southern Italy (Puglia, Basilicata, Campania, and Sicily), is developing to combat exploitation and contribute to the healthy growth of one of the region’s most relevant productive sectors.
