Seasonal workers from third countries: the Commission invites Italy to correctly transpose all the provisions of the Seasonal Workers Directive

The Commission has decided to initiate infringement proceedings by sending letters of formal notice to Belgium, Bulgaria, Germany, Estonia, Greece, Italy, Cyprus, Latvia, Lithuania and Luxembourg for the non-compliant transposition of all the provisions of the Seasonal Workers Directive.

The Directive aims to ensure fair and transparent rules for the admission of seasonal workers from third countries to the EU. It also aims to ensure decent living and working conditions, equal rights and sufficient protection from exploitation.

The Commission is monitoring how all Member States have transposed this legislation into national law. The Commission considers that these Member States have not correctly transposed and/or implemented certain obligations under the Directive.

The Member States concerned now have 2 months to respond to the arguments put forward by the Commission. In the absence of a satisfactory response, the Commission may decide to send a reasoned opinion.
